It’s not often that you find a band in your own city that encapsulates all you’ve been searching for when it comes to the Alternative genre.
Well friends, if you’re still on the hunt, look no further. I sat down with Arc the Forest ahead of their EP launch at Waiting Room to get some background on their journey, snap some pictures and chat about their inspirations and their bright, bright future.
The band has officially been together for just over a year, after much deliberation over a name on their group chat (with “the We Don’t Really Know Yet” and ‘Green the forest”, among the options); Arc The Forest was born.
With a collaborative writing process, Arc The Forest is able to produce music that reflects the thoughts and emotions of all the band members.
“We each get a line to write [laughs] no I’m kidding, I guess an individual brings a song and we work on it together until we’re happy with it – it’s an extremely open and collaborative process”
When asked about their biggest local influence, all band members mentioned Gangs of Ballet – “Our Rock stuff is very much inspired by them, our vibe in the South African music scene would work well with theirs, and it would be sick gigging with them”
Their international inspirations include Daughter, Kings of Leon, the 1975, Muse, Mumford and Sons and the Lumineers.
I’ve had their EP, Young on repeat for the last few weeks, and I continue to love each song more than the last. From the folky guitar on ‘community’ to the heartfelt vocals on crave this “Young” has it all.
In the meanwhile, have a listen on to their EP below
