The Fitness Fifteen – Frequently Asked Questions

November 14, 2014

Fitness is a huge part of my life that I’ve grown to love, and have become more dedicated to over the last year or so. Recently, I’ve posted some Pictures on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and my personal Tumblr) and have since been asked a few questions about my routine/diet by friends and family as well as people that follow my public social media accounts.

So, I thought I’d do a post – and answer them all at once. I’ve lost about 10kg over the last year and a half, as a result of my own research on nutrition and exercise; but I’ll save the full story for a vlog in the near future.

So, here goes

1.       What is your workout plan?

I hate plateaus, and I like variation in my workouts, so I concurrently do two plans at any given time: one for HIIT, and one for weight lifting, all steady state cardio (running, hiking etc) I save for my “rest days” where I don’t go to the gym.  For HIIT use the app Carrot at the moment (free on Apple’s app store) and for weightlifting I currently follow the Jamie Eason 30 day knockout plan.

2. Describe your diet in terms of foods, calories and macros.

I eat a plant-based diet, stopped counting calories about a month ago, so I couldn’t say how much – guessing about 1200-1500 per day – depending on how much I end up working out. My macros vary, and basically are around 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fat.

3.       Do you believe in cheat days?

Yes and YES! Although after one meal I usually go back to eating salad, because I love salad.

4.       What is your take on carbs?

I mainly eat plants, and plants are carbohydrate rich, and I’ve managed to get the results I want. There are simple carbs and complex carbs. There are carbs and then there are carbs. Eat them, don’t, every person has a different journey.

5.       Do you use any supplements?

A plant based supplement = pre workout, and a plant based protein powder = post workout. That’s all.

6.       What is your goal weight and how far are you from reaching it?

I don’t have a goal weight; in fact, I haven’t weighed myself in the last 2 months. I use the mirror, how my clothes fit, and my never-ending supply of pre-workout selfies to determine my progress.

7.       How do you stay motivated?

I follow a few fitness accounts on instagram that post great inspiration, but mostly I remind myself how far I’ve come and how much I still have to grow and learn, my curiosity motivates me.

8.       How did you get a 6 pack?

-This question made me LOL

I don’t have a 6 pack; at best I have a 4 pack in good lighting.

From what I’ve gathered, getting a 6 pack is all due to squeaky clean eating. Maybe one day when I grow up I’ll stop having cheat days and I’ll answer this question.

9.       Do you bulk and cut?

Yes, I do. And yes, I know I’m a girl…

10.   Do you do cardio or strength training first?

I do HIIT on an empty stomach in the morning, 10 minutes cardio before, and another 15 minutes after my weight lifting session.

11.   What is your favourite form of cardio?

12.   What is your favourite exercise that requires reps?

13.   What is your least favourite exercise that requires reps?

14.   What is your favourite healthy adaptation of junk food?

Protein pancakes.

15.   What is your favourite low-calorie warm beverage?

I love plain, unsweetened tea! I could go on and on about every type of tea I drink – but my current favourites are Camomile tea from The Tea Merchant, cranberry, apple and cinnamon from Woolworths and mint green tea from Wellness Warehouse.

If you read all of this you’re a champion, you’re also probably my mom.

Just kidding (kinda)

Happy Friday!
