Winter in Cape Town is, for the most part, not a fun time. Its actually all fine and well until you’re not in the sun. Or you forget your third layer. Or when it rains, for a week straight. We compiled a list of things that have brought happiness to the gloomy days – here are our Winter favourites.
This winter I’ve loved my Dune London Emma crossbody bag – it goes with almost every outfit and adds some subtle colour and a touch of glamour to those gloomy winter days!
The Emma crossbody bag retails at R1099.95 at Dune London Stores.
To me, full lashes are synonymous with luxurious winter makeup looks and the Benefit “They’re Real!” mascara has been the real MVP. You guys, its really really as good as everyone says it is. I was gifted this smaller size at Cosmo Jeans 2016 but I’ll definitely get my hands on the full size product when it warms up enough for me to hit the mall… Or when this one finishes… whichever happens first.
Benefit “They’re Real!” Mascara retails for R295 at selected Edgar’s and Red Square stores.
The Oranjezicht City Farm (OZCF) is a non-profit project celebrating local food, culture and community through urban farming in Cape Town. Their Market Day at Granger Bay on a Saturday morning is my favourite way to shop for food. The Market offers fresh organic produce as well as various other yummy and sustainably sourced and produced items. One can also indulge in a meal at the market with beautiful ocean views as the backdrop. Go check it out – you won’t be sorry!

Fortunes is an australian band that has been on repeat in my life these last few months! Their unique RnB and Electro sound has brought some much needed funk to the grey winter days. Have a listen to their tracks on their website and give them a cheeky follow while you’re there – I’m so keen to see what they do next!
The Fix is my new go to shop for affordable trendy clothing. I have been looking for a pair of shoes like these for awhile and was so happy to find this pair, especially in time for winter they can be worn with socks and stockings making layering that much easier.
I never really believed in primer but after using this product my perception of primers has definitely changed. This product gives a foundation a smooth base and prepares the skin for make up, allowing the make up to be longer lasting and even on days when you don’t wear make up it gives you a ‘airbrushed type’ finish.
Maybelline Instant Pore Eraser is available at Clicks and Dischem for R89.95.
Essence nail polish works as well as salon brands, at less than half the price. I’m constantly checking for new colours and ranges by essence and love this plum coloured nail polish they recently came out with.
Essence “The Gel” nail polish is available at Clicks and Dischem for R29.95.
Described as a restro – bar (restaurant and bar) Arcade has become Cape Town’s top place to be. During the week Arcade is a great place to meet up with friends after class or even after work drinks with colleagues, Toward the end of the week it becomes more of a club type scene with a truly Cape Town cosmopolitan vibe with the coolest neon signage. And the best part is that the kitchen only closes as 11pm!
If you like artists like Aluna George and Ta-Ku, you’ve probably heard Kaytranada’s latest album 99.9% and if you haven’t you should check it out. I love listening to upbeat music especially in winter, as it makes the cold, that much more bearable.
And there you have it – a few things that have made surviving winter in Cape Town a little easier.
If you need us we’ll be in bed, dreaming of summer sun,
Ray and Donna xx
